Golf Swing Tips – How to Stop Topping Golf Balls and Improve Your Golf Swing

September 19, 2009 by admin

Do your golf balls just roll along the ground and never get into the air? This is called topping the ball, and happens because your club contacts the ball above its equator. Ironically, many golfers make the problem worse by trying to “help” the ball into the air – trying to lift or scoop the golf ball off the turf. So, what is the correct way to stop topping the golf ball?

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. Fundamentally, the problem is that your golf swing mechanics are incorrect in some way. Assuming that you are using the correct golf club, its design will ensure that ball will fly into the air when you swing the club correctly. The fastest way to stop topping golf balls is to consult a golf pro or golf swing coach. He will be able to see where your worst mistakes are and suggest the best drills to improve your golf swing. Once you learn to perform those drills correctly, this embarrassing problem of dribbling your golf ball on the ground will be fixed.

Of course, not everyone has access to a competent golf pro. Before you start surfing the web for a solution, let me give you a warning. Some websites use the terms topping the golf ball, skulling, and hitting the ball thin interchangeably. Not to mention that the golf swing tips contradict each other. Let me suggest a more old fashioned alternative. Go hit your local library for some golf swing instruction books. Look for the books which teach golf swing techniques or show the correct golf swing mechanics. Browse them and borrow the books which you can understand. Read them carefully and take notes. Then go hit a few dozen golf balls and capture it all on video. Analyze what you see, and compare it against your notes. You should see some major deviations from the norm. Once you correct these mistakes, you should have improved your golf swing and stopped topping your golf balls.

Pursuing shortcuts tends to be a hit or miss affair. I must admit that sometimes you just do not have time to do it right. In such cases, you just have to cross your fingers, make a quick prayer and hope for the best. So, here are two quick golf swing tips to stop topping golf balls:
Aim one inch in front of the ball. Stand with the ball further back in your stance. Swing your club as usual, and you will hit the ball lower.

Some golfers find that they only top the ball with their drivers and low-numbered irons. This shows that they have difficulty controlling the added power when they swing these clubs. Here are three golf swing tips to help you:
Practice half-swings until you consistently hit the ball without topping, then graduate to practicing full-swings Practice swinging the golf club in slow motion to ingrain the correct movement into your muscle memory. Once you are satisfied that you fully understand the correct golf swing mechanics, gradually increase the speed you swing the club. Practice your golf swing with old-style blade irons. These old-fashioned clubs have tiny sweet spots. They give you excellent feedback when you do not hit the ball right – the club vibrates strongly and stings your hands. Once you can contact the ball with the sweet spot consistently, you will stop topping the golf ball.

Topping the golf ball once is embarrassing. Topping the golf ball swing after swing is humiliating. The fastest way to stop topping golf balls and improve your golf swing is to ask a golf swing coach to look at your swing. The next best way is to study and understand the correct golf swing mechanics.

Golf Club Clones – the Facts About Golf Club Clones

September 19, 2009 by admin

There are many misconceptions from consumers regarding golf club clones so hopefully the following information will clear the air once and for all.

What exactly is a golf club clone? – A golf club clone is not an illegal counterfeit / copy golf club. It is not some cheap knockoff made in dodgy warehouse. They are quiet the opposite. A golf club clone is a club which has been designed to look and play similar to many of the big brand golf clubs on the market.

Golf Club Clones are designed and manufactured by legitimate companies with their own brand, therefore not infringing any patents or trademarks. They are usually made with similar materials and are of a similar quality to the brand name clubs, the difference is clones can be purchased at a fraction of the cost.

Why are they so cheap – So you are probably wondering why golf club clones are so cheap. Well there are a few factors. Firstly let’s go with the obvious, when you buy a brand name club, like Taylor made or Nike, you are paying for exactly that, the name. The big brands have forged such a good reputation; they know consumers will pay the asking price to have their clubs.

The second big factor regarding price is materials. As many of you know, china is the resource capital of the world. Many of the major golf club manufacturers have their clubs made in China and they are then shipped to the US for example and assembled and then brought to the market.

Most clones come from the China region, and you will find that they use similar if not the same materials as the brand name clubs when making the clones. The only difference is there is no major brand name; instead it is a relatively unknown brand. This leads me onto my next point.

The major brands have a lot of overheads which is relayed onto the end price the consumer pays for their products. For example, Taylor Made would have some lavish office housing several business departments and a heap of staff. On top of this they would have a manufacturing and storage warehouses with further staff. Labor laws in the US ensure that the average salary is a lot higher than developing countries. Already you can see my point, look at all the extra costs involved. Now let’s go back to China, materials are easily sourced, labor is a lot cheaper, business operation is a lot cheaper, exportation is easy, I’ll say no more, you see my point? My point is Golf club clones are not cheap because they are necessarily inferior, it’s because the companies making them don’t have an established brand name although can produce them without all the other overheads experienced by major brands.

Watch out for Counterfeit clubs. – When buying golf club clones, be sure to watch out for the direct copy or counterfeit golf clubs. These are in fact illegal as they are a direct copy of the brand name clubs with all logos. If you try to import one of these customs may pay you a visit.

Where to Buy Golf Club Clones. – If you search the internet for golf club clones you will find many websites offering them at very cheap prices. So who do you buy from? Is it safe? Your best bet is to try EBay first. There are heaps of golf club clones available on eBay. The best part is you can research at the seller’s feedback and determine whether their products are good and if they are a reputable company. You can see what other purchaser’s think of their golf clubs.

So now we have established, golf club clones are a pretty affordable way to get your hands on some of the best golf club designs going around. Just remember, do your research on the seller, make sure they are not counterfeit and you will be fine. Don’t pay an arm and a leg, play like the pros today.

Golf Swing Improvement – How to Increase Your Swing Speed by Doing Golf Fitness Training

September 19, 2009 by admin

Are you looking for more golf swing improvement tips? Then try what some of the more successful golf pros do – enroll in a golf fitness program. Golf fitness training will increase the power of your swing, adding 10 or 20 yards to your drive. Want some proof? Just look at Tiger Woods. He is one of the fittest pros on tour today. Or some of the top lady golfers like Annika Sorenstam. They are well-built and very fit, looking like Amazons.

How Does Golf Fitness Training Improve Your Golf Swing?

A good golf fitness program does 2 main things:

Improves your flexibility – Your flexibility determines the range of your backswing. The greater the range of your backswing, the more potential power you have. Increases your core strength – More core strength lets you rotate your body faster during your swing. Obviously, more speed in your rotation equals more power in your swing.

Here is a sample exercise common in many golf fitness programs, called the Russian Twist:

Get a medicine ball weighing 3 to 6 pounds Stand up, legs hip-width apart Draw in your stomach Lift the ball level with your chest while keeping your elbows bent Swing the ball explosively around to your right You will end up facing your right hand side, with both feet pointing right Repeat the swing to the left hand side

What To Do If You Are On A Tight Budget

Buying or joining a good golf fitness program is one of the cheapest methods of golf swing improvement. Nevertheless, college students and retirees are notorious for being on a tight budget. All is not lost. Here is a framework for a do-it-yourself golf fitness program. You want to take a three-pronged approach:

Stamina – When you have more stamina, you will remain fresh even at the end of a day’s golf. Even at the very last hole you play, you are better able to maintain the power of your swing. How to develop your stamina? Go for a walk regularly. Half-an-hour everyday, if you can manage it. The faster, the better. If you can manage a run, that is even better. Flexibility – How far can your backswing comfortably go? The 8 o’clock position? 9 o’clock? 10 o’clock? Whatever your range of motion is, just push it a little bit more and hold for 10 seconds, then release the position. Do as many repetitions as possible. Don’t forget your followthrough as well. Strength – Do some core strength training to strengthen all the muscles which stabilize your spine and pelvis. These are the muscles which transfer power from the large to the small body parts when you execute your golf swing techniques.

Here are some core training exercises which do not need any equipment, relying only on your bodyweight:

Prone Bridge Lateral Bridge Supine Bridge Pelvic Thrusts Curls Lunges Squats

As you can see, golf swing improvement is not difficult or expensive to achieve. The improvements you get from golf fitness training also bleed into your everyday life, giving you the bonus of improved health and flatter abs. In addition, you can do many golf fitness training exercises in your own home, even in winter when you can’t go to the golf course.

Golf Swing Techniques – Are Golf Swing Tips Baloney Or Can They Really Improve Your Golf Swing?

September 18, 2009 by admin

Comments Off

Mastering the correct golf swing techniques is crucial to winning games on a regular basis. There are many golf swing tips claiming to teach you how to drive the ball farther. An important point to note is that many of these tips do not work in isolation. In fact some of these tips actually contradict one another!

So does this mean that all golf driving tips are just so much hot air? Of course not. You just need to know that different tips work together to form the correct golf swing technique. And there are many techniques out there. A tip which works well for one technique might just turn another driving technique into a mess. You cannot just blindly copy-cat a particular golf swing tip into your technique and expect it to work.

While there are many different golf swing techniques, all the successful techniques can be grouped into either the “one plane swing” school or the “two plane swing” school. Overall, the “two plane swing” school of driving the golf ball is more common. Its most famous exponent is probably Greg Norman.

On the other hand, you can see the “one plane swing” school in action in the drives of two of the best modern golfers in the world – Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh. Yes, indeed – the respective number one and number two golf professionals in the world today are steadily racking up their victories.

Regardless of your technique, there are two major indicators which show whether or not you have correctly mastered your golf swing: rhythm and balance. How do you know when your rhythm is correct? Well, that is like asking a musician whether or not his rhythm is correct. You need to do it. If you have to ask, then you probably do not have it yet. Having said that, once you have mastered the rhythm, you will be able to repeat the same movement consistently at the same speed all the time.

What about balance, then? For inexperienced players, you achieve the best balance by evenly distributing your weight about both feet. Unlike martial arts, you should not try to gain more power in your swing by shifting your balance around. It is far better to maintain a stable stance around which you build your swing.

A common mistake which many golfers make in their golf is to try and increase the power of their swing. It is true that you need a powerful swing to hit the ball farther, but it is even more important to first develop your accuracy. After you can get the ball going where you want, then you can improve your power. Be patient. This is the sequence of events when you do it right: increase accuracy; accuracy increased; increase power; power increased but accuracy decreased; increase accuracy at the new power level; accuracy increased at the new power level; rinse and repeat. Any other way is an exercise in frustration and hair-pulling failure.

Remember to keep up your strength training and flexibility exercises. If you achieve greater strength and a wider range of movement, it will result in your swing becoming more powerful on its own. In other words, by doing golf fitness training, you can improve your golf swing without changing your golf swing techniques. Definitely a good motivation to go to the gym regularly, yes?

Golf Clubs – Choosing the Right Golf Club Set

September 17, 2009 by admin

If you are a new golfer you want to be sure that you are using the correct golf club set for you. If you are left-handed a golf club set made for the left-handed golfer is important. Choosing a set for a man or a woman is also very important. Men’s golf club sets are generally heavier than a woman’s golf club set. If you are trying to use something too heavy for you, your game will slow down. Try to use your own golf clubs every time that you play so that the game will be more consistent with you. You will get familiar with your own clubs.

Cost is something to consider when purchasing golf clubs. Golfing can be quite costly so beginning golfers might want to start out with a lower priced set of golf clubs or buy their golf clubs second hand.

There are 14 clubs in a full golf club set. This includes woods 1, 3, and 5, irons 2 through 9. You will also have a pitching wedge, a putter and a sand wedge.

The main golf clubs in your golfing bag will be your irons. There is cast iron or forged iron. The beginning golfer should start out with cast irons. A more advance player would do well with forged irons.

The size of the head is also a concern for serious golfers. A larger head is great for beginners, but not for the more advanced golfer as it is more difficult to control. For the beginning golfer the mid sized head is ideal.

Golf clubs are made of various materials. There is the cast iron head, the titanium head, and the stainless steel head. For the beginner a titanium golfing head is best. It is lighter and they are able to make the golfing head bigger because of it. Titanium is a little costly and not for everyone’s budget. If titanium is too expensive for you then the next best thing is cast iron. Steel would be the last choice.

You also want to make sure that you get a golfing set with graphite shafts, if possible. Graphite shafts offer the advantage of being longer and much lighter in weight. Whereas a steel shaft is heavier and without the flexibility.

Take your time when you are choosing a golf club set. Even an inexpensive set can be costly. Research your options before you purchase. Do not make a quick decision. You may want to try someone else’s golf clubs out prior to purchasing your own. Good luck in your golf club shopping!

Golf Swing Tips – The Most Important Tip to Improve Your Golf Swing Technique

September 16, 2009 by admin

Comments Off

Practically every weekend golfer looks for golf swing tips to try and discover the holy grail of the perfect golf swing. Unfortunately, like so many of King Arthur’s knights, they never find it. Why not? Is it because they lack the talent, faith or hard work? Is there some missing ingredient which causes the golf swing tips they learn to fail for them?

First of all, many golfers just do not have enough practise. Golf, like martial arts or any other sport, requires practise. Unlike, say martial arts, where you only need to practice your kicks and punches on a flat surface, golf can be much more complicated. Golf is closer to warfare – you need to practice how to use 14 different golf clubs on a variety of different surfaces and terrain. How many of us actually manage to practice all 14 of our golf clubs? At best, most of us only train with two golf clubs – the driver and the putter. What about the 2 fairway woods? And the irons and wedges? How many strokes do you lose in the sand trap or bunker because you were not familiar enough with your wedges? Is your skill with your irons good enough to get you out of the roughs efficiently?

So, it does not matter how many golf swing tips you managed to find. If you failed to get enough training with all 14 of your golf clubs, 1 tip has the same effect as 10 tips — absolutely zero. Consider the example of Vijay Singh. Many golf experts and analysts have various nit-picks about his golf swing mechanics. Some of them do not like his posture. Some dislike his backswing. Others think he has excessive followthrough. But he ignores them all. All he does is swing his club at the ball all day long. Even during tournaments, he is reported to practice his swings 3 to 6 hours everyday. All this training pays off for him – he is a consistent tournament winner, earning six to seven figures every year in prizes.

Secondly, too many people rely on finding a silver bullet. Instead of practicing their swings and other shots, they waste their time looking at the latest new-fangled golf club in the catalog or golf shop. As if getting the latest and greatest driver or hybrid club will improve their golf swing without any practise. They forget that every time they change their club they need to re-learn the golf swing mechanics of that club. This is especially bad for some golfers who buy new golf clubs like their wives buy new shoes.

Thirdly, many golfers do not fully understand their golf swing techniques. They take the golf swing tip for one technique and try to apply it to another golf swing technique, with disastrous results for their golf swing. At the most basic level, there are two different types of swing – the “one plane swing” and the “two plane swing”. When you read a tip, do you know which type of swing that tip is meant for? Many golfers face serious problems when they apply the tip for the “one plane swing” to their “two plane swing” or vice versa. For your information, Vijay Singh uses the “one plane swing” while Greg Norman uses the “two plane swing”.

Despite the proliferation of golf swing tips and free golf lessons online, you only really need one tip to improve your golf swing technique – just hit the ball more often. That is all. Just hit the golf ball 10 times more everyday and you will see your handicap improving (Unless you already hit the ball 1000 times everyday).

Golf Flexibility Exercises in a Golf Fitness Program to Improve the Shoulder Turn in Your Golf Swing

September 15, 2009 by admin

Comments Off

Golf exercises within a golf fitness program can improve the shoulder turn in your golf swing. The specific type of golf exercises we are talking about are flexibility exercises. This type of golf fitness exercise is the center of your improving a shoulder turn in the golf swing. Interesting when we discuss flexibility and the golf swing the majority of attention is centered upon the lower back, and rightfully so! The area of the lower back and hips are major components in every phase of the golf swing. In the same breath we must remember the golf swing is a “total body” athletic movement requiring flexibility from the upper body as well.

This being said there are absolutely other areas of the body requiring flexibility to execute the golf swing. Research indicates areas of the upper body require flexibility to execute the backswing, downswing, and follow through phases of the swing. If a lack of flexibility exists in the upper body the ability to execute an efficient golf swing will be hampered.

One such area of the upper body requiring flexibility is the shoulder joint. This joint from anatomical perspective is considered a ball and socket joint. As a result this joint has a large amount of mobility within it. The mobility within this joint allows for golfer to complete a full shoulder turn, execute a downswing into impact, and complete a follow through.

If restrictions exist in the shoulder capsule compensations will occur in the golf swing. First and foremost “tightness” in this joint will cause difficulties at address position. Typically you will find golfers with shoulder restrictions unable to place the body in the correct set-up position and they will have a tendency to be in what is termed a “c-posture” where the shoulders are rounded forwarded.

In addition to problems with the address position, shoulder restrictions restrict ranges of motion backswing, create difficulty in squaring the clubface, cause an inability to release the club after impact, and impede the follow through. All of which will lead to difficulties with the golf swing.

To correct joint restrictions in the shoulder capsule we must first look at the muscles surrounding the joint. This would include the superficial muscles of the shoulder such as the deltoids, the rotator cuff, and muscles of the upper back. These are the muscles responsible for facilitating movement in the shoulder joint. In addition if any of these muscles found within these muscle groups are “tight” or “weak” shoulder mobility will be affected.

To correct such problems, increase shoulder mobility, and improve your golf swing. The addition of stretching and strengthening exercises for will be of great benefit. These types of exercises will focus on creating flexibility in the muscles that are commonly “tight” in the shoulder capsule, and develop strength in the ones that are “weak”.

Keep in mind the golf swing is “total body athletic action” requiring strength and flexibility from all the muscles of the body. The process by which we can improve these components of the golf swing is through a golf fitness program which incorporate golf exercises in the form of flexibility training.

The most important thing you need to know of golf swing basics is the swing itself. Not just standing over the ball and clubbing it few hundred yards down the way but actually understanding and practicing the techniques which makes your swing successful.

Try these simple golf swing basics to improve your golf swing.

1. Always think about the target you are going to hit with the ball. Do not think about anything else. Just take a deep breath and concentrate on your target. This easy tip will improve your accuracy.

2. Keep your arms straight and relaxed. Your arms should be under your shoulders. If you are in correct position your arms should be a few inches from your lover body.

3. Stand comfortably over the ball with your knees slightly bent. Balance your weight evenly on your legs. This helps you in a good initial setup and alignment to the ball. To test your golf swing balance try swinging with a coin on your outside shoe. The goal is to complete swing without the coin falling off your foot. Body balancing helps you to improve golf swing. Golf Club Bounce – Three Ways Golf Club Bounce Can Help Or Hurt You

September 14, 2009 by admin

Comments Off

Every golf club in your bag has bounce, some more than others. Here is an explanation of golf club bounce as defined by pgaprofessional.com.

Bounce: “(“bounce sole, bounce angle”) the angle of the club’s sole in relation to level/horizontal, or the amount that the leading edge of the club is higher than the part of the club’s sole that is lower most (usually used in reference to irons, wedges in particular, and measured in degrees) Example: Many sand wedges have a large flange and significant bounce.”

Confused, let`s just say that the bottom of the sand wedge has added material which makes the club more rounded. This rounded material adds weight to the club and prevents the club from digging into the turf or sand. For reference sake, most sand wedges have around 10 degrees of bounce and a D5 swing weight and your pitching wedge has 7 degrees of golf club bounce and a D1 swing weight.

We will review how you can use this bounce to your favor and stay away from it`s pitfalls.

————————————————————-

Golf Club Bounce:

1. Help–Prevents The Sand Wedge From Digging Into The Sand

The sand wedge, with the extra bounce, was developed to have a golf club that did not dig into the sand. Obviously, in the sand, you do not want to use a club that digs and gets stuck in the sand. The sand wedge will bounce through the sand and splash the golf ball up onto the green. By the way, you are adding more bounce to the club the more you open the sand wedge club face. So here, the bounce is your friend.

2. Help–Adds Weight To The Bottom Of The Club

Remember, by making the bottom of the golf club rounded and adding material, we have increased the swing weight of the sand wedge from the normal D1 swing weight to a swing weight of D5. By the way, as you probably have guessed, D5 is heavier than D1. So what this means is that you have a golf club that is heavier that is ideal for hitting out of heavy rough and, of course, sand. Especially, when chipping from heavy rough around the green, the sand wedge is very useful. The bottom line is, use the extra weight to your advantage.

3. Hurt–Golf Club Bounce Will Promote Skulls On A Firm Surface

Now, here is what you need to be aware of. You know that nice bounce that helped you on those bunker and heavy rough shots. Well, it can work against you in very firm sand and shots off of other firm lies. That bounce at the bottom of the sand wedge will not let the golf club dig on firm lies. Even worse, it will promote skulls that can be your worst nightmare. So, be aware of your lie conditions and stay away from the sand wedge on any lie that is not bounce friendly!

————————————————————–

There it is, golf club bounce. Is it your friend or enemy? Be aware, that there is a reason why your sand wedge works so well out of the bunker and learn when the bounce is going to work against you.

I hope this information on golf club bounce helped. Look for more articles on golf game improvement and golf product reviews in the near future.
